Workplace Questions Raised by VA Shootings

In the wake of the on-air shooting deaths of two local TV station employees in Virginia by a former station employee, many employers are asking if more could have been done to prevent the tragedy. While Human Resources professionals are limited by what questions can be asked of a candidate’s previous employers during the hiring process (and even then struggle to get answers from former employers looking to avoid confrontation or even a lawsuit), this tragedy does bring into focus the importance of reference and background checks. These background checks should be carefully considered when hiring, although employers are cautioned that general workplace nuisances will rarely show on a criminal record.
