NY: Gender Identity Discrimination Ban

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA), which amends the state’s Human Rights Law “to expressly prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender identity or expression”.

Proskauer Rose LLP explains that the GENDA Act:

“also expands New York’s hate crime laws to include crimes against transgender and gender non-conforming people”.

The Act will go into effect February 24, 2019, with certain provisions related to the expansion of the state’s hate crime laws taking effect November 1st.
