New Jersey now follows other states that have made pregnancy a protected category. Governor Chris Christie signed the bill on January 21, 2014 to amend the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination to include pregnant employees. This change is effective immediately. The New Jersey LAD now applies to pregnant employees as well as those medically affected by childbirth. Under this law, employers are required to provide reasonable accommodation to employees in the form of periodic rest and job restructuring. New Jersey employers should review the amendment in detail to ensure they are familiar with the specifics that surround the change.
