Is Harassment Training Required?

Must we train our employees on Harassment Awareness?

In Connecticut and California, companies with 50 or more employees are required to provide such training to all Supervisory employees.

Each respective state provides specific guidelines on content and length of training, as well as method. There is no such requirement for staff level personnel. Additionally, the state of Connecticut is proposing new legislation that would require more employees in supervisory roles to receive anti-harassment training.

This all being said, all employers should seriously consider providing such training to all employees at all levels regardless of their location. Why? Workplace Harassment continues to be a huge workplace issue that costs employers millions of dollars each year in litigation, fines, and court judgments. In fact, it ranks in the top 3 types of legal actions filed against employers in the US each year.

Employers who provide awareness training immediately reduce their risk by raising awareness, as well as by sending a message that such behavior will not be tolerated.
