Washington: New Paid Family and Medical Leave Insurance Law

Washington’s new Paid Family and Medical Leave Insurance Law will require employers to provide “a total of up to 18 weeks of paid leave to employees who work in the State of Washington”. Effective January 1, 2019, “employees may take up to 12 weeks of paid family leave or paid medical leave per year, or a combined total of 16 weeks for family and medical leave”. Reasons for paid leave include caring for a family member with a serious health condition, bonding with a new child, or reasons relating to one’s own health. Employers should review current policies in preparation for the implementation of this new law.
