For candidates who will have to write and/or present as part of their job, this is a critical question/answer. Past performance is a direct indicator of future performance. To that end, we want to know what they produced, if they had help, the nature of the project, its complexity, and even the nature of the audience. If it was a client or more senior management then we can learn by asking about how they handled the pressure and how they were received, as well as any constructive feedback they were given. Overall the key is to probe on several levels.
