Connecticut Governor Malloy has signed into law Public Act No. 15-196, which is intended to end pay secrecy. The law, entitled An Act Concerning Pay Equity and Fairness, bars employers from requiring employees to sign a waiver or other documents denying their right to disclose, inquire about, or discuss the amount of their wages or the wages of another employee. The law also prohibits employers from discharging or discriminating against an employee who disclosed wage information. The new law goes into effect immediately and Connecticut employers are advised to review their current policies and other documents to ensure compliance.

New CT Law Protects Unpaid Interns
Effective October 1, 2015, unpaid interns in Connecticut will be provided with the same protections as employees covered by the Connecticut Fair Employment Practices Act. These additional protections for unpaid interns, which include workplace harassment, discrimination, and retaliation protections, are a result of the enactment of Public Act 15-56 that was signed into law in June by Governor Malloy. Employers are advised to become fully versed in this new law, as well as train all supervisors regarding these additional protections so as to avoid any possible lawsuits.
