What are you better at today than you were three (3) years ago?

We’re looking for evidence of professional growth in the answer to this question. You want to listen intently as to what actual skills have improved, probing thereafter as to how and why. Did this candidate set goals for improving their knowledge or was training offered / thrust upon them? Is their growth tied to their own desire to better themselves or more tied to their employer’s desire to cultivate their employee’s talents and skills? If you offer training and development in the same fashion then you have some solid baseline information to build on in terms of future training. If you offer no such training and rely on your employees to learn on their own then be sure your candidate has demonstrated the ability and desire to “self-develop” their skills.
